Backyard treehouse: a perched home for escape, introspection

Michelle and Bill built their backyard treehouse for their autistic daughter Frida, but she never liked it as much as the swing that hung from the same tree. After a decade sitting empty they began to let people stay for the night and it’s become a popular spot for people (especially from the San Francisco Bay Area tech world) in search of an escape from ground level reality.

The perched shelter sits 30 feet above ground in a multi-trunked 110-foot-high eucalyptus tree. There’s no electricity (though there are solar lights) and this is an intentional move to avoid the “hum” of being connected. There is a flush toilet, but activities are limited to games and books and listening to the sounds of the trees.
