Circling the globe for organic beans

Organic chocolate may not be as well-known as organic t-shirts or milk, but it’s no less consequential. When grown conventionally, cacao is one of the most pesticide-intensive crops and can accelerate the clearing of tropical forest. Organic cacao is normally shade grown which helps preserve forest and support wildlife.

In this video, Frederick Schilling, founder of Ashland, Oregon’s Dagoba Chocolate (bought in October 2006 by Hershey’s, but operated independently), talks about the organic market for cacao and why he travels around the world working with farmers.
