Hester Street Fair: homemade, homegrown, hyperlocal shopping

For over a century Hester Street has been home to New York City’s biggest and oldest pushcart markets, so when SuChin Pak (and partners Ron Castellano, Adam Zeller and Suhyun Pak) decided to start a flea market here in the summer of 2010 they pronounced it “established in 1895“.

The Hester Street Fair is a mix of flea market, farmers market, foodie paradise and Etsy storefront. It’s also an incubator for new, local, businesses: many here, like those behind Macaroon Palace have no prior selling experience, and now some, like the bakers from Melt, are planning on opening a storefront.

In this video, Hester Street’s SuChin Pak (also of MTV and Planet Green) gave us a tour of this “modern-day pushcart bazaar” where “artists can sell the old-fashioned way”.
