Space-saving furniture that transforms 1 room into 2 or 3

At a time when many of us – due to finances, the environment or increasing urbanization- are trying to put our homes on a diet, there’s one obvious place to cut: our bedrooms.

“The bed is dead”, says Ron Barth of Resource Furniture. To Barth, the idea of occupying a room just to house a bed is archaic. This is because Barth sells beds that are so far beyond the traditional Murphy Bed, it’s awkward to even bring up the term.

Resource Furniture sells bookshelves, couches and desks- and a combination of the above- that are so highly engineered that they gracefully transform into beds.

Gone is the amusing awkwardness of Murphy Beds, this more modern transforming furniture (much of it designed and made in Italy by Clei) is high style and almost, well, magical. Hydraulics make the transition from bookshelf, or couch, to bed a smooth and effortless thing to marvel.

Not only can most of it be done with your fingertips, but you don’t even have to remove anything from the bookshelf or desk. Everything is so carefully engineered, that during the transformation books can stay on the bookshelf and your piles of stuff can stay on your desk. The desk and shelves remains parallel to the floor the entire time. You’ve got to see it to believe it.

In this video, Resource Furniture founder Ron Barth talks about a future where not only bedrooms, but dining rooms will do double duty. He shows us the furniture that makes this future look awfully attractive.

Oh, and he doesn’t call his furniture space-saving. He sees it as something bigger, as space, reinvented.
