Sustainable yard: drip irrigation, thyme groundcover

The days of installing sprinklers systems for large grass lawns may be numbered in much of the United States. A growing public awareness that water is a limited resource, especially in much of the West, is causing many of us to rethink what we plant and how we water.

Unless you have an entirely xeriscaped garden, you’ll need some way to deliver water and the most efficient system is drip irrigation. By preventing
evaporation and runoff and providing water just to where it’s needed, this technology uses about 60% less water.

In this video, Russ Reeves shows us the drip system he’s helped install in his mother’s frontyard of her Northern California home as well as the thyme groundcover she uses in her backyard.
