Disposable diapers, or nappies, make up about 2-5% of domestic garbage. About 4.5 trees are cut down to diaper one baby in disposables.
Recognizing that there is an alternative, some Canadian provinces have instituted an environmental tax on throwaway diapers. Governments and community groups (UK, New Zealand, Australia) are pushing for a return to “Real Nappies”.
Since washable diapers have moved much beyond cotton and pins, some groups (Scotland, London) have created guides for parents and healthcare providers to navigate a world of velcro and snaps, fleece and hemp, prefolds and all-in-ones.
Continuing our coverage of the diaper debate and greener options (a flushable), in this video, Seattle’s Stephanie Morris shows us how and why she uses Fuzzi Bunz pocket diapers.
