Into month two of life with our worm bin and we’ve started to notice more life than we’d expected. There are still seeds germinating in there, but we also noticed some mold growing in a couple small patches. It turns out that mold and fungi can help break down food waste, especially the tougher stuff that the worms might have more trouble with (like my broccoli stalks).
But what started to become a problem were the flies. Particularly because we’d placed our bin in the kitchen. (In hindsight, we’ve learned that we didn’t put enough “bedding”, like shredded newspaper or cardboard- on top of our bin and were probably over-feeding it).
In this video, we take a look at what a worm bin might look like during month two and show off our mold and flies.
