Downshifting explained: the happiness-wealth disconnect

The industrialized world has become increasingly efficient- in the US in just a 12 hour work week, we can produce what took 40 hours back in 1950- but instead of more free time, we are working longer hours than ever and we’re no happier.

According to statistics from 65 countries analyzed for the World Values Survey, money and happiness only track until $13,000, after that increases in wealth hardly improve happiness.

In the past few years a movement is catching on of people who have chosen less work and less money for more time for themselves and family. In this video, Worldwatch’s Gary Gardner explains how downshifting is helping some people find a bit more happiness.
